Moderation Policy
Purpose of moderation
Timepins is intended as an open and accessible way to record change at a fixed location. Moderation is not there to steer contributions or select them on content, but to safeguard the quality, safety and usability of the timeline.
Principles
- Moderation takes place mainly after the fact.
- The focus is on the image and the location, not on the person who took the photo.
Upload channels and visibility
Contributions can arrive in two ways:
- Via the webapp — the contributor takes the photo directly in the browser and submits it via the mandatory consent checkbox. Webapp contributions are in principle immediately visible after upload. Contributions may automatically end up in a moderation queue based on technical or content-related criteria, including a location check.
- Via the mail fallback — the contributor sends a photo by email to [email protected] with the project code in the subject line, when mobile coverage is absent or insufficient.
Visibility after upload differs per channel:
- Webapp contributions are in principle immediately visible after upload. Contributions may automatically end up in a moderation queue based on technical or content-related criteria.
- Webapp contributions that are immediately visible are reviewed for content within 48 hours. If rejected, the contribution is removed or hidden.
- Mail fallback contributions always start in the moderation queue and are reviewed before becoming visible on the timeline.
The content review criteria are the same for both channels.
Distinction: opt-out and moderation
- The 7-day opt-out is a right of the contributor. When using the mail fallback the contributor always receives a confirmation email. Within 7 days the contributor can request removal of the photo via [email protected]. With webapp contributions consent runs exclusively via the consent checkbox.
- Moderation is a power of Timepins. Timepins reviews contributions after the fact on quality, safety and usability, regardless of whether the opt-out period has elapsed.
What is expected of contributions
- The photo was taken from the intended Timepin location.
- The photo shows the relevant location or the subject of the project.
- The photo is intended as a record of a moment in time, not as personal expression.
When Timepins intervenes
Timepins reserves the right to correct, hide or remove contributions when they:
- Do not recognisably relate to the relevant Timepin.
- Are offensive, misleading or manifestly inappropriate.
- Contain commercial, political or promotional messages.
- Unnecessarily violate the privacy of third parties. The incidental presence of persons in a public space is not a reason for removal; only when someone is clearly recognisable and centrally in frame in a way that could harm their personal privacy.
- Structurally disrupt the timeline.
Corrections and technical adjustments
Timepins may technically process submitted images for consistent presentation, such as cropping, straightening or scaling. These adjustments do not change the substantive meaning of the image.
Reports and signals
Contributions can be flagged by those involved or by initiators. Timepins makes the final decision on any action.
When a claim based on portrait rights is made, Timepins weighs the public interest of the timeline against the individual interest of the person concerned.
Reports can be made via [email protected], stating the project and the date of the photo. No active discussion is conducted about individual moderation decisions.
Responsibility
Timepins is responsible for the technical operation of the platform and general moderation. Initiators do not have their own moderation rights, but may pass on signals.
For webapp contributions that are immediately visible, Timepins aims to complete a review within 48 hours. For reports via [email protected] no fixed response times are guaranteed.
